The accident occurred around 11:00 am (10:00 am in Lisbon) on Monday, on a section of motorway 7 (A7) in the municipality of Marbella, in Andalusia.

Traffic was chaotic after the small accident, as the other drivers realized that money was literally flying across the road.

“At first we didn't really know what was going on. But we could see parked cars and people getting out and bending down to pick something up”, one witness told Efe news agency.

“Then someone commented that what was on the floor were fifty euro notes”, added the witnesses.

The car involved in the accident had a total of 20,000 euros, which belonged to two citizens of Arab origin who did not need medical attention and who were carrying the money in a suitcase, according to the security forces.

After only a few minutes, the situation caused a huge traffic jam, and firefighters, the Civil Guard, and the road maintenance service of the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) were called to the scene.
