According to the DGS epidemiological bulletin, 56 patients are hospitalised in intensive care, 10 less than on Tuesday

As for inpatients on the ward, official data indicate that 211 patients are hospitalised today, 22 less.

The number of new cases today is slightly higher than in recent days, and half of the 511 new infections are in the region of Lisbon and Tagus Valley (250).

Portugal had not recorded more than 500 new cases since 28 April.

The two deaths occurred in the North and Centre regions.

The data also shows an increase of 92 active cases of infection, now totalling 22,089.

Since the start of the pandemic Portugal has already recorded 843,278 confirmed cases of infection by the new coronavirus and 17,013 deaths.

The number of contacts under surveillance by the health authorities has risen by 37 to 18,413.

The data also reveals that 417 people have been reported recovered, bringing the total number since the start of the pandemic in Portugal in March 2020 to 804,176.

According to the DGS Portugal has 4,594,620 people vaccinated against Covid-19, of which 1,390,715 are already immunised with the two doses.

The transmissibility index (Rt) of the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus rose today to 1.02, while the incidence of infection cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days increased to 51.4.

Rt and incidence data are updated on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

In the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, 250 new infections have been reported, with 318,548 cases and 7,210 deaths counted so far.

The Northern region now has 143 new SARS-CoV-2 infections, totalling 338,675 cases of infection and 5,351 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

These two regions account for 76.9 percent of the total number of new infections in the last 24 hours.

In the Centre region, 40 more cases were registered, accumulating 119,351 infections and 3,019 deaths.

In Alentejo 10 more cases were reported, totalling 30,004 infections and 971 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

In the Algarve region, today's bulletin reveals that 27 cases were registered, accumulating 22,062 infections and 362 deaths.

The Autonomous Region of Madeira has recorded 17 new cases, accounting for 9,527 infections and 68 deaths due to Covid-19 since March 2020.

The Azores now has 24 new cases and has counted 5,111 cases and 32 deaths since the start of the pandemic, according to the DGS.

The regional authorities of the Azores and Madeira release their data daily, which may not coincide with the information released in the DGS bulletin.

The new coronavirus has already infected at least 382,964 men and 459,958 women in Portugal, DGS data show, according to which there are 356 cases of unknown gender, which are under investigation as this information is not provided automatically.

Of the total number of fatalities, 8,938 were men and 8,075 women.

The highest number of deaths continues to be concentrated in the elderly over 80 years old, followed by the age group between 70 and 79 years old.

Of the total deaths, 11,182 were people aged over 80, 3,627 were aged between 70 and 79, and 1,529 were aged between 60 and 69.

The pandemic caused at least 3,406,803 deaths worldwide, resulting from more than 164.1 million cases of infection, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
