The National Emergency and Civil Protection Command today contacted the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), which reported a “weather forecast for the next few hours” that points to “the worsening of the weather due to the forecast of precipitation for the districts of Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal, Viseu, Guarda and Castelo Branco".

The most critical period is expected between 00:00 and 12:00 on December 25, adds the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection, in a statement.

According to the information provided by the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA), there may also be significant variations in hydrometric levels in the historically more vulnerable areas, such as the Lima, Cávado, Douro, Vouga, Mondego, of the Tagus and Sorraia, with the possibility of flooding.

Depending on the forecast meteorological conditions, flooding is expected in urban areas (due to obstruction of drainage systems), floods (due to the overflow of rivers and streams), and landslides.
