“These are historic numbers, from the point of view of the collective capacity to reduce poverty in Portugal and which reflect the fact that we have managed to resume the positive trajectory of improving incomes, living conditions and, above all, combating poverty, after the difficult year we had during the pandemic”, said Ana Mendes Godinho, at a press conference, at the Ministry of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, in Lisbon.

Data from the most recent Living Conditions and Income Survey, released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), show that the number of people at risk of poverty decreased in 2021, with the rate of risk of poverty standing at now at 16.4%, two percentage points less than in 2020.

According to INE, the reduction in poverty covered all age groups, although it was more significant for the elderly population (less 3.1 p.p.).

“These figures released today by INE show the biggest reduction ever in a year in the risk of poverty rate in Portugal”, stressed the minister.
