The report showed that fossil fuels made up 88% percent of Ireland’s gross available energy supply, the same as Poland.

Malta (96%) topped the list, followed by The Netherlands and Cyprus (both 89%). The country with the lowest reliance on fossil fuels was Sweden (32%). Finland (38%) and France (48%) were the only other countries with shares below 50%.

The figures are representative of the year 2021. Denmark had the greatest decrease in shares made up by fossil fuels between 2010 and 2021, with a decrease of 25%. It was followed by Estonia (-22%), and Finland (-19%). Germany had the smallest decrease in fossil fuels shares, with just a 2% decrease.

In total, fossil fuels made up 70% of the EU’s gross energy supply in 2021, the same figure as 2020.
