When they are born, the calves already have a considerable weight, usually between 3.4 and 6.4 kg! Our calf weighs 3kg and is already in its enclosure, with its mother, separated from the father until it is weaned. This hippo species is part of the EEP (European Endangered Species Programme) captive breeding programme of the EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquariums), so this event is very important for the ex-situ management and conservation of this species in European zoos. Although we still cannot know the sex of the little calf, last year we had a male who went to the Beauval Zoo in France. In this species, the birth of males is very important since on average, only 1 male is born for every 10 births. We hope to know soon, if this baby is male or female.
