In a statement sent to the Lusa agency, the railway management company specified that the intervention covers an extension of 45 kilometers and has an execution period of 23 months, estimating that it will be concluded in 2023.

According to IP, the level crossing located in the vicinity of the Estombar / Lagoa station will be scrapped and “a safer alternative for car and rail traffic, a road overpass will be built in the same place”.

The level crossing next to Portimão station will be requalified for pedestrians crossing only, with an overpass being built for road traffic.

The electrification project for the Algarve Line is part of the Ferrovia 2020 investment programme ‘Complementary Corridors’, which also aims to electrify the Caíde / Régua sections, on the Douro and Meleças / Caldas da Rainha (West) lines.

The electrification of the Algarve line will be carried out in two contracts: the first, on the Faro / Vila Real de Santo António section, launched on the 30th of October, and the second, now launched, on the Tunes / Lagos section.

According to the railway management company, the electrification of the Algarve line comprises a global investment of €65 million, co-funded by the European Union.
