In the first debate for the Presidential, on 2 January, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced that he wanted to renew the state of emergency with "the same regime" for eight days and not for the usual two weeks, claiming that there was not enough data on the Christmas period.

According to the same source as the executive, possible measures for this new period will only be decided on 7 January at the usual weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers.

The President of the Republic was holding a round of hearings with the parties with parliamentary representation on this renewal.

With approval guaranteed by the two major parties, PSD and PS, this will be the eighth time a state of emergency has been decreed since March.
