“In the year 2020 as a whole, tourist accommodation establishments will have registered 10.5 million guests and 26 million overnight stays, corresponding to annual decreases of 61.2 percent and 63.0 percent, respectively, after the increases of 7.9 percent and 4.6 percent registered in 2019”, said the INE adding that “it is necessary to go back to 1993, the year in which 23.6 million overnight stays were registered, to find a smaller number of overnight stays”.

The domestic market proved to be hugely important to the sector in 2020, contributing over the year with 13.6 million overnight stays, a decrease of 35.3 percent, when in 2019 that market saw a rise of 6.5 percent.

The foreign markets contributed with 12.3 million overnight stays, a decrease of 74.9 percent (after increasing by 3.8 percent in 2019).

In the year 2020 as a whole, all the main markets recorded decreases of over 65 percent, with emphasis on the Irish (-89.6 percent), North American (-87.7 percent) and Chinese (-82.8 percent).
