The race held at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA), in Portimão, on 25 October was watched by 100.5 million television spectators worldwide and was only beaten by the Hungarian race, which was seen by 103.7 million.

In a season largely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and with four fewer races than in 2019, Formula 1 had an average audience of 87.4 million viewers, 4.5 percent less than in 2019.

“The average audience for the 2020 season was largely influenced by the races in Europe and the Gulf, which means that several regions did not receive their Grand Prix, race hours were not always suitable for some markets and the usual race attendance did not occur”, explained the World Cup organiser.

In total, Formula 1 had a cumulative audience of 1.5 billion, 400 million less than in the previous year, which had 21 races and not 17.

The Algarve circuit is not currently part of the 2021 calendar, but, according to the president of the Portuguese Federation of Motorsport and Karting (FPAK), Ni Amorim, the return of Formula 1 to Portugal in May is dependent on “having an audience” or, “there can be no public, support from the Government “.
