The play-off position came after the team successfully beat Scotland on 23 February by two goals to nil in a game played in Larnaca, Cyprus.

Ana Capeta, in the 27th minute, and Fátima Pinto, in the 90 + 2, were the goal scorers in the game which saw the Portuguese team finish second in Group E, however the team were not one of the three best second placed sides and move into the play-off situation.

In the play-offs, which will take place between 5 and 13 April and have a draw scheduled for 5 March, there will also be Russia, Northern Ireland, Ukraine, the Czech Republic or Poland and Italy or Switzerland.

The final phase of the 2022 European Championship takes place in England, from 6 to 31 July, and in addition to the host team, the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Spain, Finland, Sweden, France, Belgium, Germany, Iceland have already qualified and Austria.
