“Desalination is in fact very important, even more so when it will be 100 percent financed by the PPR”, said João Pedro Matos Fernandes to journalists during a visit to the Odeleite dam, in the municipality of Castro Marim.

For the Minister of the Environment and Climate Action, “Portugal cannot miss an opportunity like this” for the Algarve, of having “a project, which is not a pilot project”, but which is “pioneering”.

João Pedro Matos Fernandes spoke to the main reservoir of the inter-municipal water supply system in the district of Faro located to the east, where three projects were presented to improve water efficiency in the region, in a joint investment worth around €5 million.

João Pedro Matos Fernandes stressed that the Government “wants to make the investments from the PRR in the next six years”.

The official stressed that there are “two major projects”: the desalination project and the other one “to find a new source of water, presumably in Pomarão, that is, in the Guadiana, downstream of the Alqueva reservoir” to be able to supply the Odeleite dam, projects that will increase the region’s drought “resilience”.
