The road accident and inspection report for 2020, presented on 29 March by the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), also points out that last year, driver detentions increased by 18.7 percent for lack of license.

According to the report, close to 113 million vehicles were inspected in 2020, an increase of 19.4 percent in relation to 2019, noteworthy the increase of 23 percent of automatic surveillance through the speed control system of the ANSR and of 103.5 percent of the Municipal Police of Lisbon, despite the 10.5 percent decrease in the inspection of the GNR and PSP.

Of the 112.8 million vehicles inspected, 1.216 million fines resulted in 2020, which represents a decrease of 6.9 percent compared to the previous year.

ANSR stresses that 62.9 percent of the total infractions contracted in 2020 corresponded to speeding.

According to the same document, only speeding increased in 2020, registering an increase of 14.5 percent compared to 2019, an increase that is essentially related to the ANSR's fixed radar system.
