Afonso and Carol repeated the triumphs achieved last year at this same stage, starting the season at the front of their respective national rankings.

The final day of the Allianz Ericeira Pro started with a super heat between Vasco Ribeiro and Tomás Fernandes in the quarter-finals, with the four-time national champion beating the experienced local surfer. In the following heat Guilherme Ribeiro beat Francisco Almeida, in a duel between the surfers from Costa de Caparica, and guaranteed the first semi-finals of his career. The quarter-finals were completed with the triumphs of Afonso Antunes against Arran Strong and also of Pedro Coelho against the national top 4 surfer Luís Perloiro.

In the semi-finals, when all odds seemed to point to a Vasco Ribeiro triumph , the youth and irreverence of Guilherme Ribeiro made the difference. After having guaranteed the semi-finals for the first time in his career, Gui wasn’t satisfied and went even further, causing one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. In the second semi-final Afonso Antunes didn’t give room for more surprises and beat Pedro Coelho to another final in Ericeira.

With the waves arriving in force to brighten the final, Guilherme and Afonso fought a symbolic heat, which joined two surfers who have been in dozens of finals together in the younger categories. After a dispute marked by the spectacularism of both, Afonso got the best score of the whole event, with 15.25 points, to guarantee the triumph. This was “only” the second victory of junior Afonso Antunes in the MEO Surf League, equalling the number of triumphs of his father, the former national champion João Antunes, in Ericeira.
