This book explores the author’s pursuit of antique pianos in Siberia. She writes about Siberian history and music and we get a glimpse into the lives of multi-generational families as she travels around Siberia. This adventure of hers took three years through desolate but ultimately a beautiful landscape.

Some of the pianos have travelled over mountains and faced a gruelling journey which reflects how important the instrument and music is. Throughout the book she talks about people, animals and landscapes, and you feel as if you are next to her as she is on her journey.

I was disappointed by the lack of photos in the book. The only photos are black and white and printed with the text. I would have loved to see colour photos of the areas she describes.

The author Sophy Roberts is a British writer whose work focuses on wild places from Papua New Guinea to the Congo. She regularly contributes to the Conde Nast Traveler. This is her first book.

There is a website, https://www.lostpianosofsiberia.com/ that accompanies the book where you can read more about the history of the country and it’s filled with videos, recordings and photos. This element adds a charm to the book and allows you to explore more if you so wish.

‘Lost pianos of Siberia’ is beautifully written and I found this a fascinating read. I would definitely recommend you add it to your reading list!
