Due to the hot weather, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) on Monday placed the districts of Castelo Branco, Faro, Portalegre and Guarda in a special red level alert status, due to the aggravation of the fire risk.

The most serious state of alert for the four districts remains until the end of today, said the assistant of operations of ANEPC Mário Silvestre. The four districts were already in a state of orange alert, the second most serious.

The districts of Vila Real, Coimbra, Leiria and Lisbon are on yellow alert, and Bragança, Viseu, Santarém, Setúbal, Évora and Beja are on orange alert.

On Monday, the Government also stated that 14 districts on the continent will remain on alert until the end of Wednesday, due to the continuation of weather conditions that increase the risk of fires.

The alert status starts from today and extends the alert status statement that had already been determined between 12:00 last Friday and midnight on Monday.

The decision, signed by the ministers of Defence, Internal Administration and Environment, covers the districts of Beja, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Santarém, Setúbal, Vila Real and Viseu.

Because of the hot weather, the IPMA has placed the mountainous regions of Madeira Island under red warning until 18:00 today.

The south coast of Madeira is under orange warning due to the persistence of extremely high values ​​of the maximum temperature and the north coast and Porto Santo under yellow warning until 18:00 on Wednesday.

Also due to hot weather, IPMA placed the districts of Faro, Portalegre, Évora and Beja under a yellow weather warning until 18:00 today.
