This number of spectators means that the stadium will effectively be sold out, due to the restrictions imposed by the Directorate-General of Health due to the Covid-19 pandemic, however the tickets that went on sale were only available exclusively to Portugal + supporters and subscribers , the official fan club of the national teams.

The Portuguese team will be playing the Republic of Ireland on Wednesday, 1 September, at the Estádio Algarve, and six days later will then play against Azerbaijan, in Baku. In between, they will face Qatar, in a game scheduled for 4 September, in Debrecen, Hungary.

At the start of qualifying, Portugal beat Azerbaijan (1-0) and Luxembourg (3-1), and drew in Serbia (2-2), taking them to the joint top position with Serbia with both teams having seven points each.

The group stage of the European qualification for Mundial2022 ends in November and the winner of each of the 10 groups will progress directly to the finals. The runners-up will compete in the qualifying play-offs, which will be joined by two League of Nations group winners who fail to qualify directly for the finals or the play-offs.
