According to data released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics (DREM), these visitors generated around 876,000 overnight stays, which represents an increase of 210.9% compared to August last year.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, the month of August is the one that presents the number of overnight stays closest to the pre-pandemic values”.

Between January and August of this year, this sector recorded a total of 2.5 million overnight stays, which represents an increase of 31.7%, when comparing to the same period in 2020, and a decrease of 56.1% than in the first eight months of 2019.

DREM argues that for the purposes of comparison with data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), "it is necessary to exclude local accommodation with less than 10 beds",

"According to this logic of calculating results, overnight stays from tourist accommodation, in the first eight months, show an increase of 26.5%, a more expressive variation than that verified at national level (+11.8%)".

Another aspect in focus is that overnight stays from residents in Portugal increased 88.5% compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching 262,600 and representing 30.0% of the total.

As for overnight stays related to foreign visitors, they presented a growth of 330.5%, compared to August 2020, standing at 613,300.
