“The excellent news comes from the export figures which, from January to September 2021, in Portugal […] grew by 11.7% in value (669 million euros)”, the association stated.

During this period, the volume of exports grew 6.7% to 244 million litres.

In turn, the average price increased 4.7% in the first nine months of the year, reaching 2.75 euros per litre.

With regard to destination countries, the highlight goes to France (84 million euros), followed by the USA (83 million euros), the United Kingdom (60 million euros), Brazil (55 million euros) and Germany (40 million euros).

These five countries represent 44.9% of the total exported volume and 48.1% of the total value.

However, according to data from the Institute of Vine and Wine (IVV), cited by ViniPortugal, the sale of still wines in the Portuguese market fell 2.5% in volume to 180 million litres and 5.1% in value to 562 million euro, with the average price down 2.7% year-on-year.

“These losses were mainly due to two factors: the lockdowns during the beginning of the year, which led to severe restrictions and a decline in the tourism sector”.

Cited in the same document, the president of ViniPortugal, Frederico Falcão, highlighted that, since 2010, with the exception of 2016, Portugal “has grown in exports, in value and volume, a milestone in the sector, especially when we see the main import markets decreasing”.
