In the population aged 80 and over, who were the first to be called back to vaccination centres after the summer, this study carried out by the General Directorate of Health and the Ricardo Jorge Institute attests that the booster dose reduces the risk of death by Covid-19 almost halved, compared to those who took “only” the two doses.
With regard to the risk of hospitalisation, the consolidation of data on admissions by vaccination status is only possible about two months after diagnosis. Thus, between October 1 and 31, 2021, "cases with a complete vaccination schedule appear to have a risk of hospitalisation approximately two to six times lower than unvaccinated cases."

It's funny. In Netherlands it's exactly the other way around. I wonder why. ALL deaths and ALL hospitalisations are unvaccinated. The Minister of Health said that ALL unvaccinated would be seriously ill (if not dead) by the end of 2021. We waited around for New Years Eve but here I am, still alive. Well. Forgive my my cynism. Happy to read that at least there is a tiny little bit of honesty in the news reporting in Portugal, except for the end part. Hopefully the Portugal News would do some reporting on the REAL figures in 2022 instead of official narrative provided by EU governments.

Did I read this correctly? That 2/3rds of covid deaths were people who had been vaccinated, and only 1/3rd were unvaccinated??? If this is accurate, then a follow-up story is needed by some experts explaining why vaccinated people are dying more than the unvaccinated! Shouldn't this be headline news? Am I missing something here?

Newspapers should try a bit harder to provide context to such data, because without it people jump to the wrong conclusions. These numbers DO NOT prove that unvaccinated die more - simply, more people are vaccinated than unvaccinated, particularly elder people - as someone else also said. It'd be more revealing to show the % of vaccinated people getting hospitalized versus the % of non-vaccinated getting hospitalized. I bet those numbers'd look very different. Shame a newspaper would make so little effort to be clearer. It's simple. 88.4% is fully vaccinated - and they take up 68% of deaths. 11.6% isn't vaccinated (and that includes infants I suppose), and they make up 32% of deaths. Quite simple to see that the odds of dying are 3.6 times higher for the non-vaccinated.

You look at some of the comments above, and face palm. There are 20 times as many vaccinated people in Portugal as unvaccinated. There are only twice as many vaccinated people dying. That means unvaccinated people are dying at TEN TIMES the rate of vaccinated people.
My 9 year old boy can do this maths in his head at dinner time. Antivaxxers, bow your heads in shame if you can't....

it could appear worse, if everybody had been fully vaccinated, even with the booster, then 100% of those that died would be vaccinated people.
