In a statement, the Public Security Police (PSP) highlighted that between January 1 and March 15 of this year, according to provisional data, 9,716 accidents were recorded, 2,941 more than in the same period last year, corresponding to an increase of 43.4%.
Between those dates, 12 fatalities were recorded, two less than in the same period last year.
As for accidents with victims, the PSP recorded a 45.5% increase in the number of accidents, compared to the same period last year, with the number of minor injuries having increased significantly (+904).
The PSP also adds that in the same period, 5,059 accidents were recorded with only damage, while in the same period 7,220 were registered, an increase of 42.7%.
The PSP stresses that “it will continue to monitor risky behaviours of drivers, especially those behaviours that have a high prevalence and greater impact on road accidents, namely, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, misuse of mobile phones and failure to use (or misuse) seat belts and restraint systems.”

If it isn't already part of the driving test, it might be a good idea to include a recognition of road signs and their meaning, as Stop signs, One way Street and Speed Restrictions all appear to have no meaning tp the majority of Portuguese drivers who also appear not to be aware that cars are fitted with indicator lights!

So many portugese drivers believe that a roundabout is a formula 1 race track and those little orange lights are to be used only for when portugal wins a football match or weddings.

Not to mention the favourite pastimes of tailgating,crossing solid white lines ,overtaking on a blind bend. Sometimes all three in succession.

The GNR are hitting easy speeding targets, such as those motorists who are on a straight clear road where the speed limit is adequate but the limit suddenly slows to 50 for a 100m due to a side turn. The enforcement here is not hitting the real problem - those drivers who drive dangerously close to the vehicle in front, using their mobile phone, failing to give way at junctions and roundabouts, parking on bends or junctions etc etc etc. I have driven all over the world but the average Portuguese motorist is probably the most dangerous I have ever encountered.

How about teaching people to signal when turning? I feel people are so lazy and can't be bothered to use their indicators, as though the effort might tire out their poor little fingers. Too often you wait at the entrance of a roundabout and could have entered were it not for a car already on it failing to indicate they are leaving the roundabout which means you could have entered. Meanwhile, another car is on the roundabout, so you can't enter just yet, and again it fails to signal it is leaving, robbing you of a chance to enter the roundabout. Supreme selfishness!

Fully agree with the other comments. Indicators seem to be optional as is undertaking dangerously via the slip roads particularly near the International School in Lagoa

Brits, living in what I consider the best place in Europe, favourite pastime, is commenting about the Portuguese and their driving.
I'm often embarrassed to share the same nationality with these people! Living in paradise, but moan, moan and criticize! My advice to them would be, just leave, go home, back to your perfect Britain! We won't miss you!
