The solar park, promoted by the company Génese Natural, will be installed in the parish of Santa Bárbara de Nexe, on the outskirts of the city of Faro.

In a note sent to Lusa, the project promoter said that the park will have an annual electricity production capacity of 24 gigawatt-hours (GWh), allowing for enough power for around 6,943 homes.

The company predicts that the production of energy through the solar system will avoid the annual emission into the atmosphere of 6,093 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

The future photovoltaic plant will occupy a gross area of 24 hectares, consisting of 24,000 solar panels spread over 14 hectares, and it is expected to come into operation later this year.

For the representative of Génese Natural, Rogério da Ponte, quoted in the document, the park “will have a fundamental impact on the production of solar energy in the region of Faro, one of the best in terms of solar radiation in continental Europe”.

According to the official, the investment of €13 million in the new solar park “is a very important step for the company, as it reinforces its presence in the Portuguese market”.

Faro mayor, Rogério Bacalhau, also quoted in the note, highlighted the “unique significance” of the equipment for the municipality, as it fits into the “objectives defined by the municipal executive in terms of renewable and environmentally friendly energies”.

“Faro will always be available to host projects in the area of sustainability that allow us to grow without jeopardising the environment, promoting the well-being of our municipality and our citizens”.
