According to Jornal de Notícias, while the cost of goods is rising, in January the national average salary increased by 1.7 percent, compared to the same period in the previous year. This means that the price of the basket of essential goods rose more than three times compared to salaries.

According to monthly Social Security data, in January the average salary of the Portuguese increased by 1.7 percent, compared to the same period in the previous year, to €1,303, driven by the rise in the national minimum wage (€705), as well as by the increase in the remuneration of the Civil Service. However, the income of the Portuguese is being absorbed by the soaring inflation, which reached 5.32 percent in March.

DECO reports that if on February 23, a basket of 63 essential products cost €183.63, last Thursday the same basket already cost €193.63, which represents an increase of 5.44%. Among the products that increased the most in the last week were 100% vegetable cooking oil (59%), breakfast cereals (12%), potatoes (8%), sea bass (8%), turkey (7%) and carrots (6%).
