In a statement, the PSP district command of Faro reported that it had been alerted at 00:30 to the presence of a wild boar in the centre of Olhão, namely, on Avenida 5 de Outubro, an area where several restaurants and drinks establishments are located.

“The police repeatedly tried to get the wild boar to return to its natural habitat, an area of bush that was about 600 metres away from the place where it was detected”, however the animal “came in the direction” of the police.

As a last resort, police from the PSP police station in Olhão shot and killed the animal, “in order to stop the imminent threat to the physical integrity of those present”.

If the animal got too close to people, the situation “could give rise to social alarm and a potential serious threat to the physical integrity of passersby”, stressed the police.
