On the last day of last month, 8.5% was in mild drought and 4.3% in severe drought. There was no extreme drought.

According to the drought meteorological index (PDSI), the situation of meteorological drought continues throughout the territory, with a decrease in the area in severe drought, with a large part of the continent now in the moderate drought class.

At the end of March 81.7% of mainland Portugal was in moderate drought, 15.9% in severe drought and 2.4% in mild drought.

The institute classifies the meteorological drought index into nine classes, which varies between “extreme rain” and “extreme drought”.

“Normal” month

In addition to the drought index, the IPMA Climatological Bulletin indicates that the month of April was classified as normal in terms of air temperature and dry in terms of precipitation.

The mean values ​​of the mean air temperature (13.38 degrees Celsius) and the maximum temperature (18.96 degrees) were higher than the normal value.

The lowest minimum temperature value was recorded on April 4th in Penhas Douradas (-6.5 degrees) and the highest value in Santarém on April 30th with 31.4 degrees.

As for the average amount of precipitation in April, the IPMA reveals that it was 58.3 millimeters, lower than the normal value for 1971-2000.
