The measure aims to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from new cars to zero by 2035.

At the request of some countries, including Germany and Italy, the EU has nevertheless agreed to consider giving the green light in the future to alternative technologies, such as synthetic fuels or plug-in hybrids, if they are able to achieve the objective of completely eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

The date of 2035, although not yet official, is in line with the one recommended by the European Parliament and the European Commission, with whom countries will have to negotiate the final rules.
