In 2020, there were a total of 2,244,715 employees in Portugal (TCO), with full hours and full remuneration. Faro (35.8%) and Funchal (31.8%) were the so-called functional urban areas (FUA) that had the highest proportion of employees with fixed-term contracts, that is, of limited duration.

With values ​​above the national average (29.1%) were the areas of Braga (30.4%), Aveiro (29.8%), Póvoa de Varzim (29.7%), Ponta Delgada (29, 7%) and Lisbon (29.6%), while Guimarães recorded the lowest value in this indicator, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute (INE).

Workers with a work contract of limited duration received, on average, less than the majority of those hired in Portugal. The average monthly earnings among those with fixed-term contracts was around 1,082 euros, a value 13% lower than the total average monthly earnings. Only in the areas of Lisbon (1,066 euros) and Porto (1,044 euros) were earnings above the average of these urban areas, fixed at 1,041 euros.
