According to SAPO, six Portuguese surfers, including Olympians Teresa Bonvalot and Yolanda Hopkins, will compete in the ISA World Surfing Games, the first chance to qualify for the Paris2024 Games, the sport's federation announced on 18 August. The ISA World Surfing Games will take place from the 16 to the 24 September on Huntington Beach in California, in which Portuguese surfers, Frederico Morais, Guilherme Ribeiro, Guilherme Fonseca and Francisca Veselko will compete alongside the two Olympians.
In statements released by the Portuguese Surfing Federation (FPS), coach David Raimundo, who for personal reasons will not accompany the team, is confident in their presence in the Paris2024 Games, after the sport debuted in the Olympic programme in Tokyo2020."I am very motivated and confident that we will be present at the Olympic Games again. This championship has only two places [one per category], but Portugal will do everything to fight until the end for these places. We know that of the three qualifying stages, this will be the most difficult, but we believe in our quality. We have already proved in previous years that we are one of the best teams in the world", he said.
Nuno Telmo, who will replace David Raimundo in California, said: "this is a marathon in which we have to act as a well-oiled machine for several days, sharing the same space and the same spirit and common goals. We want to guarantee Portugal’s Olympic slots for 2024, that's the shared state of mind of the whole team. And I am very confident that we will do even better than in Tokyo 2020, in which we obtained three places".
In 2022 and 2024, the winning teams of the ISA World Surfing Games may qualify one athlete of each gender, in 2023, the best classified of each continent (Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania) will conquer a spot by gender, in a total of four men and four women, being that the spot of the American continent will be attributed to the Pan American Games.
In 2024, the 'top-5' men and the 'top-7' women of the World Surfing Games will qualify, in which two representatives for France will be added. France will be the organising country, and a 'universal' vacancy for the International Olympic Committee.
The three spots achieved for the Tokyo2020 Olympic Games, disputed in 2021 due to the covid-19 pandemic, were occupied by Yolanda Hopkins, fifth place, Teresa Bonvalot, eliminated in the third round, and Frederico Morais, who ended up not participating because of covid-19.
