"Both noise and atmospheric pollution, mass tourism and
the housing crisis it causes, and the emission of greenhouse gases from
aviation, all point to the same solution. It is simple and gentle. It is
necessary to reduce air traffic", say the organisations, which launch the
appeal in the face of "the intention of the political and economic elites
to increase the airport capacity of the capital".
In the appeal (open for subscription at https://aterra.info/lisboa-com-os-pes-na-terra/ ), the organisations consider that aviation
is a danger both to the health of the population and to planetary health, and
ask for solidarity with those who suffer from the impacts of air traffic and
the expansion of airports, in Portugal and in the rest of the world.
“The ecological crisis is an opportunity for us to radically
change for the better”, say the organisations, considering that this involves
“reducing the total installed capacity at Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Beja
airports”, and promoting the railway.
The organizations emphasise that the airport is the biggest
source of pollution in Lisbon and a threat to the health and well-being of the
population, with planes flying over Lisbon and Loures every two and a half minutes.
In addition to reducing planes, the organisations advocate
in the document that the railway be developed as a means of transport for
medium and long-distance trips, connecting Portugal, day and night, with Spain
and the rest of Europe, and also making connections across the country.
The organisations ATERRA, Campo Aberto, Climáximo, GAIA,
Left Hand Rotation, Morar em Lisboa, Rede para o Decrescimento and Stop
Despejos have all signed the appeal.
Reduce the capacity at Beja Airport! It's a white elephant.

Oh yes, let's just shut the country down and eat bean sprouts. Good luck with that. And maybe chant a little bit....something.

If you want to live under a flight path, go for it! Lisbon needs an expanded airport like Portugal needs a return to COVID lockdown. How about an airport near Coimbra? The third largest city in Portugal!
