The numbers are surprising, as they are proportionately more than the metropolitan areas of Madrid and Barcelona, which have far more inhabitants, and which are respectively in second and third place.
The Lisbon area has around 2.8 million inhabitants, while the community of Madrid is home to 6.6 million.
In Portugal, the next metropolitan areas with the highest concentration of digital media are Porto (132) and Braga (97), also informs Iberifier, an Iberian project, which aims to combat disinformation.
In the study, the global number covers so-called non-native digital media (which arise from a newspaper or other media) - 805 in all - of native digital media (419), created digitally from scratch. There are five digital media that could not be determined.
Other curiosities reveal that among the total, there are 617 digital means of global information (national, regional and local), 79 dedicated to culture, 61 to sport and 53 to the economy, for motor sports there are 31 specialised means and only 349 require subscription.
The database, which in a few days will be available to the public on the observatory's website (www.iberifier.eu), was unveiled at a seminar of the consortium held in Grenada.
Iberifier brings together a total of 23 universities and research centres on the peninsula, “fact-checkers” (news verification organizations), in addition to the Efe Agency. It is funded by the European Commission and is one of eight international consortia in this area existing in the Union.
