These figures were revealed by the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF).
In 2022 support for animal welfare increased to 12 million euros, while in 2021 it was around eight million, which allowed the creation of 47 new collection centres, along with the modernization and expansion of 24 existing facilities.
Last year alone, around 800,000 pets were registered in the Companion Animal Information System (SIAC), with the number of sterilizations in the last year having increased by 64.12%, for 28,990 animals.
The information sent states that the 800,000 companion animals registered in the SIAC “is one of the clearest indicators of the need for social and legislative developments in terms of animal welfare, to reinforce the response to the problems that still exist in this area”.
The Portuguese should be forbidden to own pets because they abandon animals they treat them badly and let their pets dirty all public spaces. It is criminal how dogs are allowed to howl and bark 24/7. it is criminal how badly animals are treated in Portugal.
