According to the 'HIV Infection Report in Portugal – 2022',
1,803 new cases of HIV infection were diagnosed in the 2020-2021 biennium. Of
these, 870 refer to 2020, and the remaining 933 to 2021.
The document, presented by the Directorate-General for
Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), reveals
a 44% reduction in the number of new cases of HIV infection and 66% in terms of
new AIDS cases between 2012 and 2021.
During the years 2020 and 2021, in particular, 415 new cases of AIDS were diagnosed.
In the same period of ten years, it was concluded that in
55.4% of the cases the diagnosis was late. And although the "heterosexual
transmission" of the disease remains the most frequent (51.8%), cases in
"men who have sex with men (MSM)" corresponded to the majority of new
diagnoses in individuals of this sex (56,0%).
In 91.9% of cases diagnosed in these two years, transmission
occurred through sexual intercourse, while cases of injecting drug users
accounted for 2.3% of the total.

Good journalism requires a bit more depth, to explain not only “what” but “why”. For example, Portugal makes the hiv-prevention drug Truvada for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) available for free to those who request it. PrEP is a single pill that can be taken daily or on-demand as a way to protect against hiv infection. It’s revolutionary.
Part of the PrEP program includes mandatory regular testing for hiv and other STDs.
So, perhaps the next article could explore how many people are in the PrEP program in Portugal, how readers can request to participate, etc. Just a little suggestion on how to report better.
