Leading the list is Switzerland, where owning and using a
car costs 1,313 euros on average per month. Ahead of Portugal are Norway (1,249
euros) and the Netherlands (1,166 euros), according to data from the Car Cost
Index, an annual study carried out by LeasePlan that analyses the cost of
owning and maintaining a car.
The cheapest place to run a car in Europe is in Greece,
where it costs €905 per month on average.
According to Expresso, electric vehicles, in almost all
segments and European countries, "are now at the same price, or more competitive,
than petrol or diesel cars". In the case of Portugal, the total cost of
ownership of an average electric family car is 35% lower than the average for
combustion and plug-in alternatives.

Unfortunately there is no breakdown of the cost between repairs, fuel, insurance and depreciation. I suspect they've included the latter despite it not being a cash cost, and it probably accounts for the majority of the cost. It's not something you 'pay' for, but is a cost that erodes the car's residual value. There will be a huge range in the cost of running a car depending on the model, so it's almost pointless to talk of an 'average'.

Thanks for the info, but it is mostly useless information, without a break down of what comprises this total cost. I feel you are mostly careless in publishing this article. Since the "study" was done by a leasing company I think the info is tainted. To provide a more useful article on this subject, you should require a study to provide details, or not publish it at all. With out this quality standard, you are produce=ing nothing but sensational "click bait" which is so annoying. Anyway, hope you appreciate this point of view. Boas Festas.

THAT is absolutely baseless! You mean to tell me if I have a Renault Clio and drive around Lisbon or Porto proper with gas and insurance e1,000. A MONTH!!! Absolutely ridiculous. I drive a paid for Honda Civic in Miami and with gas, insurance and repairs it costs me around $3,000. A YEAR. This "average" car must come with a chauffeur! At that rate a e20,000. Clio would equal the cost to operate in 2 years! Might as well take an Uber and not worry about parking or does the article want us to "lease" a car since it was a bias study by that group. Why would you publish such nonsense; sounds like you're discouraging people to move to Portugal and buy a car lol.
