Speeding is punishable by a fine according to the Highway
Code. However, more than just a fine, the driver may also lose points on their
driving license or even be issued with a driving ban.
It's best to drive without exceeding the indicated speed, otherwise,
you can appeal against a light, serious or very serious sanction, depending on
the case, as explained by Multas e Coimas and reported in NM
Within the locality,
the limits for light vehicles and motorcycles are:
- Excess up to 20 km/h of the maximum permitted speed limit,
the infraction is LIGHT.
- Exceeding more than 20km/h up to 40 km/h of the maximum
permitted speed limit, the infraction is SERIOUS.
- Excess of more than 40km/h up to 60 km/h of the maximum
permitted speed limit, the infraction is VERY SERIOUS, with a fine of 300
euros.
- Exceeding the maximum permitted speed limit by more than
60km/h, the infraction is VERY SERIOUS, with a fine of 500 euros.
Out of town, the
limits for light vehicles and motorcycles are:
- Exceeding up to 30 km/h of the maximum permitted speed
limit, the infraction is LIGHT.
- Exceeding more than 30km/h up to 60 km/h of the maximum
permitted speed limit, the infraction is SERIOUS.
- Excess of more than 60km/h up to 80 km/h of the maximum
permitted speed limit, the infraction is VERY SERIOUS, with a fine of 300 euros.
- Exceeding the maximum permitted speed limit by more than
80km/h, the infraction is VERY SERIOUS, with a fine of 500 euros.
All sanctions that are applied according to the Highway Code.
Light fine - 60
to 300 euros;
Serious Fine -
120 to 600 euros; possible driving ban of 1 to 12 months; Loss of 2 points
Very Serious Fine
- 300 to 600 euros or 500 to 2500 euros; driving disqualification - 2 to 24
months, loss of 4 points on the card, loss of license if temporary
I agree speeding fines should be reinforced by loss of licence, however what i find incredible is that parking in restricted parking sreas such as handicapped, are also deemed as a serious offence and may result in loss of licence.

We live in a village(VALES) with a 30kph speed limit. We have 2 crossings. Nobody drives at 30 or less many up to 50/60 as there is no risk of being caught. Nearby Aljezur has 2 signs 70 to 50 before lights. We have nothing but a 30 sign at about 50m into the village.
