According to Sapo, from Monday 20 February, fuel prices will increase, both in petrol 95 and diesel with an increase of 1 cent per litre in petrol 95 while a litre of diesel should rise by 1.5 cents," a source from one of the main national oil companies has said to 'Multinews'.

Prices at service stations near hypermarkets will follow suit, with a "rise of 0.0086 euros on 95 petrol. Diesel will also register a sharp rise of 0.0163 euros," another source said.

After two consecutive weeks of falling fuel prices, Carnival week will be marked by price hikes: so filling up a tank with 60 litres of 95 petrol will cost 60 cents more. The bill for topping up a tank of diesel will be 0.9 euros more expensive.

On January 1st, a litre of petrol 95 cost 1.607 euros per litre and, as of tomorrow, it should reach 1.676 euros. The litre of diesel, in the same period, went from 1.602 euros to 1.551 euros.

Data from the Directorate General for Energy and Geology (DGEG) show that the average price of a litre of plain diesel in Portugal currently costs 1.526 euros per litre, while that of plain 95 petrol is worth 1.666 euros. The most recent bulletin on fuels from the European Commission indicates that Portugal has the 11th most expensive 95 petrol of the 27 countries of the European Union. Diesel is in 3rd position among the cheapest in the European ranking.

According to European data, both the price of diesel and 95 petrol in Portugal are below the European average, set at 1.724 euros for both fuels.
