Children in the favelas of Rio are breeding mosquitos in a bid to rid their communities of dengue fever.

The children are breeding the pests while infecting them with Wolbachia bacteira as part of an initiative by the World Mosquito Program (WMP).
According to Positive News, Wolbachia cripples the insects’ ability to transmit blood-borne viruses like dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever. The bacteria is spread by releasing captive mosquitoes to breed with wild populations.
