In January, national tourist accommodation establishments accounted for 1.5 million guests and 3.5 million overnight stays, values that reflect growth of 72.5% and 74.5%, respectively, compared to the same month of last year, with emphasis on the external markets, which totalled 2.3 million overnight stays, doubling the total number of overnight stays in January 2022, according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

According to INE's quick statistics, the total number of guests and overnight stays also reflects growth of 3.2% and 6.5% compared to January 2020.

According to INE, in January, “all the seventeen main issuing markets registered increases in January, having represented 83.8% of overnight stays from non residents”.


British market


In terms of external markets, the highlight in January was the British market, which accounted for 14.8% of total overnight stays from non residents, followed by the German and Spanish markets, with shares of 11.3% and 10.2%, respectively.

Compared to January 2020, there were, however, decreases in overnight stays from British guests (-3.2%), Swedes (-19.6%), Brazilians (-15.4%) and Danes (-15.1% ), while the biggest increases “were observed in the North American (+53.1%), Polish (+65.4%) and Irish (+48.1%) markets, having also increased in the number of German (+9.9%) and Spanish guests (+11.4%)”.

Overnight stays recorded increases in all regions, with INE highlighting AM Lisboa, which accounted for 32.6% of overnight stays, followed by the North (17.6%), RA Madeira (17.0%) and the Algarve (16.3%). Compared to January 2020, “there were also increases in all regions, especially in Madeira (+20.9%), Centre (+6.2%) and North (+5.3%)”.


Hotel stays


INE indicates that, in January, increases were common to all segments of accommodation, with overnight stays in hotels, which represented 81.9% of the total, growing 77.1% compared to the same month of 2022 and 2.7% compared to January 2020. Overnight stays in Local Accommodation, whose share was 15.6%, grew 71.2% compared to January 2022 and 25.3% compared to January 2020, while overnight stays in tourism in rural and housing spaces, which had a share of 2.5%, grew 28.1% compared to January 2022 and 45.8% compared to January 2020.

In January, the net occupancy rate per bed was 29.4%, an increase of 10.9 percentage points compared to the same month of last year, while the net occupancy rate per room stood at 37.0%, having increased by 13.6 percentage points compared to January last year.

The average stay stood at 2.37 nights, after an increase of 1.1% compared to January last year, with emphasis on the average stay of residents, which totalled 1.71 nights and increased by 0.8%, while that of non-residents, who stayed at 2.95 nights, decreased by 9.7%, with the highest values recorded in AR Madeira (4.59 nights) and Algarve (3.69 nights).
