According to Notícias ao Minuto, an expert from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) explained that tornadoes "are quite rare" in Portugal. However, there are "convective factors" that "indicate some probability" that this could happen in certain regions of the country this afternoon.

In the words of the specialist, there are today "some ingredients" that favour the appearance of phenomena of this nature, highlighting the existence of "wind with some rotation", as is forecast for this afternoon.

In addition, "the conditions are also in place" for the occurrence of "gusts of wind and heavy showers", as well as for hail and thunderstorms. The specialist noted, however, that these more extreme meteorological phenomena are expected, essentially, in the regions of the Interior and the North Coast.
