On 27 February 2024, the first Michelin Guideline Gala in Portugal will take place in Albufeira, celebrating the best of Portuguese gastronomy. The announcement was made on 2 June, at a press conference held at the Faro Hotel and Tourism School.

After more than 100 years of the existence of the prestigious Michelin Guide, the sought-after autonomy and distinction of Portuguese gastronomy will become a reality. In a ceremony that began with a welcome drink in the morning, in which Algarve products were honoured, namely the famous Algarve orange, the venue of the first Michelin Gala of Portugal was revealed, which will be at the Palácio dos Congressos, in Albufeira.

"This region is known for its beaches and natural beauty, but its gastronomy is an excellent factor of attraction, closely linked to the sea. Combining the qualities of the region with the international recognition of the Michelin guide is a recipe that enhances the identity of the Algarve region," said Nuno Ferreira, from the Michelin Guide Portugal.

"We are working hard to make this ceremony a special and relevant event for the region and for the country," he added.

"It is no coincidence that we (in the Algarve) have eight of the 38 award-winning restaurants in Portugal and that two of the seven with two stars are in the region. The region has a quality that stands out," said João Fernandes, adding that this will be a very special moment that will bring together experts, enthusiasts and the media.

According to Luís Araújo, head of Portugal Tourism Board: "We all value our gastronomy, but especially the tourists who visit us. The two things they most praise in Portugal are the friendliness of the people and the second is the gastronomy. This leads us to work hard to improve our gastronomy.

“It's time for our gastronomy to be known not only after the visit but as a reason for choice."
