Julia Hammond, one of the members of the band, explained: “It all started when we were in a choir and used to rehearse at the Salvation Army church in São Brás, we then left the choir to form our own band and went on to organise charity event’s for the Salvation Army and other local causes but our main charity has always been the Salvation Army”.

The band is comprised of Julia Hammond, Roger Guppy, Barbara Leitch, Linda McLean, Patricia McLean, Marie Luis Andersson, Jean Hughes, Isabel Camoesas and previously also included Yvonne Frost, who has now left the band but who was a big part of the fundraising for a long time.

“They are an amazing group of people and they also have a great band conducted by Captain Luis, which we have had the privilege to perform with”, said Julia.

“We would always put on a Christmas event for the Salvation Army to help raise funds for local families around the festive season, we would also join the Salvation Army Band at the São Brás theatre for a Christmas show which was always great fun for all of us whilst helping families at the same time.

Unfortunately this year things may be different but I’m sure we will find a way to make something happen.
“It has been a joy and an honour to be a small part in the scheme things, of the incredible work the Salvation Army do for our local community, Captain Luis and his team are something very special and an absolute credit to the Salvation Army.”
