An initiative of the Secretariat of State for Portuguese Communities, based on data collected by the Observatório da Emigração, a research center at Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, the report indicates that Switzerland recorded 2,087 acquisitions of Swiss nationality by the Portuguese in 2021.

The authors of the document state that since 2001 the number of Portuguese entering Switzerland has never been so low.

In 2013, the Portuguese accounted for 12% of migrant arrivals in Switzerland, while in 2021 they were just 5.3%.

Switzerland is the third country in the world where the most Portuguese emigrate, after Spain and the United Kingdom.

This was followed by the United Kingdom (2,042), the United States of America (1,555), Luxembourg (1,141) and France (1,128 in 2020), as countries with the highest percentage of nationality obtained by Portuguese.

In the case of the United Kingdom, this “race” for nationality “seems to be explained, above all, by the fears induced by ‘Brexit’ and the reduction of rights associated with the status of foreigner that may result”, indicate the authors of the document.

In 2021, the Portuguese represented 17% of foreigners who obtained Luxembourg nationality, a high percentage that increased for the second time in the last five years.

Luxembourg is the sixth country in the world where more Portuguese emigrate.
