According to the “Immigrant Integration Indicators — Annual Statistical Report 2022” by the Migration Observatory, cited by Público, the number of immigrants who contributed to Social Security represented 10.1% of total contributors. That is, despite the increase in the cost of social benefits that benefited immigrants in 2020 and 2021, “very positive and unprecedented financial balances were achieved”. More than 802.3 million euros in 2020 and another 968 million euros in 2021, reveals the report.
“Globally, the foreign population residing in Portugal plays an important role in balancing the accounts of the Social Security system, contributing to a relative relief of the system and to its sustainability”, concludes the document.
