“Since 20:00 yesterday [Monday], when the alert [of bad weather] was issued, and 07:00 today, there have been 129 occurrences recorded, involving 438 operational and 188 land resources”, the commander told Lusa in the operations room of the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC).

Since Monday, mainland Portugal has been affected by the Fien depression, responsible for the worsening of weather conditions in the coming days with forecasts of low temperatures, rain, strong wind, and sea turmoil.

According to Elísio Pereira, the North and Center regions were the most affected by the bad weather, with occurrences in the districts of Viseu, Guarda, Coimbra, Braga, and Porto.

"By typology, the fall of trees was the occurrence that was recorded in greater numbers, followed by the fall of structures and some floods, cleaning of roads and mass movements", he indicated.

According to the commander, in the Viseu, Dão, and Lafões Sub-region, 20 occurrences were registered, in Beiras and Serra da Estrela 12, Alto Minho nine, Porto Metropolitan Area eight, and Coimbra region with seven.

“All other sub-regions have lower occurrence numbers. With regard to maritime agitation, so far we have no record of any occurrence,” he said.

According to the IPMA, the weather in mainland Portugal is being “influenced by the joint action of an anticyclone located in the Azores region and the Fien depression, inducing a strong northwesterly current over the continent with the transport of a polar air mass".

For today, the IPMA predicts showers, snowfall above 800/1,100 meters in the North and Centre of the country, and the intensification of the wind, with gusts that in some regions could reach 120 kilometres per hour.

Because of bad weather, the IPMA issued a red and orange warning for sea unrest and a yellow warning for snowfall and wind.

The IPMA indicated, in a statement released on its website, that the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will change from an orange warning to red from tonight due to maritime unrest
