"The number of counterfeits seized in circulation in 2022 decreased by 1% compared to 2021. 10,732 counterfeits were seized, which represents 2.86% of total seizures in the Eurosystem", says the BdP, in a statement.
Even so, the BdP notes that the "number of counterfeits detected is residual when compared to the total banknotes in circulation".
The "10 euro denomination was the most seized in Portugal, and not the 20 euro denomination, as in previous years".
The banking supervisor stresses that "seized counterfeits can be identified using the 'Touch – Observe – Tilt' method".
"It is important that users check the banknotes when they receive them. A counterfeit is not refunded, which implies a loss for the person who receives it", states the BdP.
