Hope Spots are identified by the company as locations around the world that are crucial to the health of Earth’s oceans. The Hope Spot stretches from Kenmare Bay in Kerry to Loop Head in Clare.

The Hope Spot is home to critically endangered marine species, including sharks, seabirds, and others.

Founder of Mission Blue Dr. Sylvia Earle said the new designation was crucial for Ireland’s waters. She highlighted that over 80% of Irish people believe the ocean needs to be protected, conserved, and restored.

Fair Seas, an NGO coalition focusing on the environment, has called for 30% of Ireland’s waters to be designated as Marine Protected Areas by 2030, at a minimum.
