“What we propose is that these profits that have been created at the expense of the population, at the expense of speculative prices, be taxed in an extraordinary way,” Duarte Alves told Lusa.
The Assembly of the Republic will debate today the Government's bill for the taxation of extraordinary profits. With an absolute majority in parliament, the socialist executive diploma has assured approval, but the PCP considers it insufficient since it “excludes the electricity sector, banking, and insurance companies”.
He proposes that taxation “also cover these sectors and not just stop at oil companies and food distribution”.
“On the other hand, [we want] a broader scope than that of the Government because our proposal is that the extraordinary taxation applies to above-average profits in recent years and not just to a part of those profits when they exceed the threshold 20%”, he added.
