"The number of requests has been growing significantly, and in recent years there were a total of 233 requests in 2020, 400 in 2021 and 519 in 2022", says the Directorate-General for the Administration of Justice (DGAJ) of the Ministry of Justice website.

The registration of the change of sex and first name registration can be requested by national citizens of legal age; or minors, aged between 16 and 17, through their legal representatives; or adults covered by the regime of accompanied adults, unless the court has declared that the person cannot change the mention of sex and first name.

“The Citizen Card must be updated within 30 days after the registration of the change of mention of gender and name change. The children of people who have changed their gender can ask for their birth registration to be updated”.
