Speaking to Lusa agency, the president of AMAL, António Miguel Pina, said that “an appeal has already been launched” to the Government and the Portuguese Football Federation for the Algarve to be one of the teams’ training camps.

“The Algarve wants to be part of this great event” stated the president of the association that brings together the 16 municipalities of the Algarve, remembering that the region “is used to hosting tourism linked to sport, teams and national teams from all over the world”.

He highlighted that the Algarve “can represent an added value for the teams”, given its privileged location that guarantees proximity to the borders of Spain and Morocco.

The mayor of Olhão also pointed out the “excellent hotel and sports infrastructures that exist throughout the region”, so that the teams can carry out their preparation stages for the 2030 World Cup.

According to the person responsible, “there has already been a first contact” with the Algarve Football Association, where AMAL expressed its availability to be one of the internship sites, in what is “a first step” towards starting work.

“As the Algarve does not have a stadium with the capacity to host a World Cup game, we believe that it is fair that the merit of the region having excellent conditions for the teams' training camp is recognised", he concluded.

Organised by Portugal, Spain and Morocco, the 2030 Football World Cup will be held for the first time on three different continents.

In addition to Europe and North Africa, the inaugural games will take place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, in South America, as a way of "celebrating the centenary" of the competition, whose first edition took place in 1930 in Uruguay.
