How long does it take to travel by train across the Algarve?

If you are departing from Vila Real de Santo António, you will have to pass 28 stops until you reach Lagos.

According to a report by Postal, the price of the train journey is set at 10.70 euros, but young people up to 25 years old have a 25% discount. Those traveling alone, regardless of their age, also benefit from the same discount percentage.

Around 140 km separate Vila Real de Santo António from Lagos. The journey, which takes around 1 hour and 25 minutes by car, can take more than 3 hours on the regional train. One of the reasons why this route takes so long is the obligation to change trains in Faro. Once you arrive at this station, you may only have to wait 20 minutes to board your train to Lagos, or you may have to wait for more than an hour.

Portugal's rail system is absurdly bad for a Western European country. Our politicians and the Portuguese should be ashamed of the situation. Just look at what Spain did.

Maybe Portugal simply doesn't need long distance rail systems. Busses are much better value and they use existing infrastructure. Focus for rail should be on metropolitan areas.

Long distance rail for Portugal only supports Germany and France, who wan to sell their systems.

Follow France any internal flight shorter than 2hr must be done by rail BUT if Portugal had invested as much as it did on the road network since joining EU to rail network they would be in a much better position now all the best for 2014 Andy b

My wife has an aversion to flying (simply can not get on an aeroplane) and would love to visit Portugal, Lisbon / Belém in particular. The unconnected and lack of good connections from France through Spain then into and around Portugal makes it highly unlikely we will ever visit together.
