"From the end of the afternoon on the 31st, the probability of precipitation is low, with New Year's Eve night being expected without precipitation, although there will be very cloudy skies mainly in the North region", according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), which warned, however, that this meteorological situation "has some associated uncertainty".

The institute stated that the "anticyclonic region located over the Atlantic, extending in a crest towards the Iberian Peninsula, and a depression in the digging phase towards the British Isles, will affect the weather in mainland Portugal".

Between December 29th and 31st, periods of rain are expected, which will generally be light, in the North and Center regions, especially in Minho and Douro Litoral.

In the South, the probability of precipitation occurring is low, with the exception of the afternoon and early evening of the 29th, when the probability of occurrence values is between 40 and 70%, especially on the west coast, as detailed by the IPMA.

New Year’s Day

On the first day of 2024, precipitation will return to Minho and Douro Litoral from the afternoon onwards, extending on January 2nd to the remaining regions of the North and Center.

The IPMA also added that the maximum temperature will remain without major variations, with values varying between 13 and 17°C on the coast and between 9 and 12°C in the interior.

The minimum temperature values, which will remain unchanged until the 30th, will vary between 2 and 12°C, with the highest values expected on the North coast. On December 31st and January 1st, a small drop in the minimum temperature is expected, which will be recorded first on the North coast and then on the rest of the territory, with minimum temperature values close to 0°C being expected in the North and Center interior regions.

On the 2nd, a further increase in the minimum and maximum temperature values is expected, which will be more significant in the interior districts, the institute also highlighted.

The IPMA has placed the districts of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga under yellow warning on the last day of 2023 due to maritime unrest, due to "northwest waves with a significant height of 4 to 5 meters".

This alert is valid between 06:00 and 18:00 on December 31st.
